Baystate Equipment Brings Grid Iron Magic to South Shore
First, a snowstorm in October. Now, a night home game for South Shore Votech.
What's next? A-Rod coming through in the playoffs?
Don't know if the crazy weather will return this fall, but the Vikings' backyard foray into prime time will be a one-time thing, at least for this season.
Saddled mostly with Saturday morning kickoffs, South Shore Votech has been pining for Friday night lights for a while now. As Athletic Director Joe Marani put it, "We're probably the only team in the state that's happy to play away games - if we can play at night."
No need to travel this week, though. For the first time ever, the school will erect temporary lights for Friday's 7 p.m. home game against Mayflower League (Large) foe Bristol-Plymouth (3-1).....
Quincy-based Baystate Equipment Rental and Sales Company will provide the hardware - eight 30-foot-tall light towers, each fitted with four 1,000-watt bulbs and attached to a generator. Kevin Dooley, the company's president, said the lights will be delivered Thursday and removed Saturday morning.
Dooley, a former Cohasset High quarterback whose son Conor is a two-way lineman for the Skippers' freshman team, said installing lights is the "wave of the future" for most towns that want to draw bigger crowds.
"Saturday afternoon football is the way of the past," agreed Pembroke AD Bill Fallon, who has rented portable lights from Dooley's company for two games already this season and will do so again for next Friday's matchup with Hanover. Fallon said the crowds for Pembroke's two home night games were about double what the Titans normally draw on Saturday afternoons.
